Mat grew up in Edmonton, Alberta and played his minor hockey with Knights of Columbus. After playing three years in Midget AAA, he signed with the Lloydminster Bobcats of the AJHL. Mat earned Best Defenceman award in his second season with Lloydminster and was then traded to the Spruce Grove Saints. In his 20-year old year he won Best Defenceman with the Saints and committed to Minnesota State University-Mankato (NCAA-Div 1). Mat studied Elementary Education and was named to the NCAA All-Academic Team in 2012-2013. Whilst his time in Minnesota, he was named the Most Improved Player and won a WCHA Championship. After returning home to complete his degree, Mat played with the Stony Plain Eagles in the ACHW and was named to the Second All Star Team in 2014. He has not only been working in the St. Albert Public Schools Hockey Academy for the past 8 years, but has also been involved in skill development with CK Hockey and has experience coaching at various levels. Mat is eager to motivate and encourage kids of all ages to pursue their dreams just as he did. He has a strong understanding of the game and is thrilled to learn and grow alongside the players he coaches.
